The king politely sends back the leading townsmen and calls the beggars respectfully, giving them ornaments, clothes, horses and elephants, and leaving all of them nourished with love. They sing his praises again and again and turn back with Rāma in their hearts. Again and again the king of Kosala asks Janaka to turn back, but Janaka, overcome with love, does not want to. Then Daśaratha says lovely words: 'Lord, you have come a long way; please turn back.' He gets down from his chariot and stands, and a flood of love swells his eyes. Then Videha, with folded hands, speaks as though his words were dipped in the nectar of affection: 'How shall I make my plea? Great king, you have given me honour.' So the king of Kosala has honoured his fellow-father-in-law and kinsman in every way, and in their meeting and mutual humility their love does not fit in their hearts.
