Chapter 320 · The two kings meet · Verses 1–

Janaka and Daśaratha meet with deep love, keeping every Vedic and worldly custom. As they embrace, the two kings look so alike that poets, searching for a comparison, are ashamed. Finding none, they admit defeat and offer only that these two are like each other. Seeing the equal match, the gods are moved, rain flowers and sing praises. They say that since the Creator made the world they have seen and heard of many weddings, but never a match of equals in every way as today. Hearing the gods' true and lovely words, a rare love grows on both sides. Spreading welcome cloths, Janaka leads Daśaratha respectfully into the pavilion. The sages are charmed by its wonderful design. Janaka seats them all on thrones with his own hands, worships Vasiṣṭha as his family deity and Viśvāmitra with a love that cannot be told, and honours Vāmadeva and the other sages, giving them heavenly seats and receiving their blessings.

They found none anywhere and in their hearts admitted defeat; they brought to mind only this likeness: these two are equal to each other. Seeing the equal match, the gods were moved, rained flowers and began to sing their fame.

'Since the Creator made the world, we have seen and heard of many weddings, but a match equal in every way, in array and company, and fathers-in-law who are equals, we see only today.'

Verse 4

Hearing the lovely true words of the gods, a love beyond this world rose on both sides. Giving cloth-paths and welcome water, Janaka respectfully led Daśaratha into the pavilion.

Seeing the pavilion's wonderful design and loveliness, the sages' minds were taken. Wise Janaka placed thrones for all with his own hands. He worshipped Vasiṣṭha like his family deity, bowed and received his blessing; and the love with which he worshipped Kauśika cannot be told.
