Chapter 319 · Rāma enters the pavilion · Verses 1–

Holding back their tears as unlucky at the hour, the queens glad of heart do the welcome rite, performing all the Vedic and family customs well. The five instruments sound, auspicious songs rise, and cloths of many kinds are spread as a path. They wave lamps, offer water, and Rāma walks to the pavilion. Daśaratha and his company shine there, and the guardians of the quarters are ashamed at the splendour. From time to time the gods rain flowers and Brahmins chant peace-verses. There is an uproar in the sky and the city, and no one can hear himself. Thus Rāma comes to the pavilion, is given water and seated. Brahmā and the great gods, in the dress of Brahmins, watch the show, and count their lives fulfilled on seeing Rāma, the sun to the lotus of the Raghus. The barber, gardener, bard and dancer receive gifts from Rāma and bless him with bowed heads, their joy hardly fitting their hearts.
