Chapter 311 · No likeness for the brothers · Verses 1–

The women say the visit will bring feasting of many kinds, and who would not love such a son-in-law's house? Each time they see Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa the whole city will be happy. They speak of the pair, one dark and one fair, with lovely limbs, as the Creator's own handiwork. Bharata looks so like Rāma that people cannot tell them apart, and Lakṣmaṇa and Śatrughna are alike from nail to crown. They cannot find any likeness in all the three worlds. Then the women, spreading out their sari-ends before the Creator, pray that all four brothers be married in this city so that they may sing auspicious songs. In tears and thrilled, they say to one another that Śiva will make it all happen, for both kings are oceans of merit.

There will be feasting of many kinds — who does not love a house like this son-in-law's? Every time they look at Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa, all the people of the city will be happy.

Verse 2

Friend, as Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa are a pair, so are the two boys with the king. Dark and fair, with lovely limbs — all who have come and seen them say so.

Verse 3

One said: 'I saw them today — as if the Creator had shaped them with his own hands.' Bharata has the very look of Rāma, and men and women cannot tell them apart at a glance.

Verse 4

Lakṣmaṇa and Śatrughna look alike, flawless from nail to crown. They please the heart, their faces cannot be described, and there is no likeness anywhere in the three worlds.

No poet anywhere, says Tulsīdās, can offer a likeness: they are themselves oceans of strength, humility, learning, virtue and beauty. The women of the city spread out their sari-ends and beg the Creator: may all four brothers be married in this city, and we sing auspicious songs.

The women tell one another, with tears in their eyes and bodies thrilled: 'Friend, Śiva will do it all — both kings are an ocean of merit.'
