Chapter 270·Paraśurāma demands who broke the bow·Verses 1–
Janaka told the news and the reason all the kings had come. Hearing, Paraśurāma turned and saw the pieces of the bow on the ground. In great anger he said harshly, 'Say, fool Janaka, who broke the bow? Show him at once, or today I will overturn the earth as far as your kingdom goes.' Janaka was too afraid to answer, and the wicked kings were secretly glad. The gods, sages, nāgas and the city's men and women were all worried, seized by great fear. Sītā's mother regretted in her mind that Brahmā had spoiled a settled matter. Hearing Bhṛgupati's nature, Sītā felt half a moment pass like an age. Seeing all the people afraid and Jānakī frightened, Śrī Raghubīra spoke, with neither joy nor sorrow in his heart.
