Chapter 265 · The city rejoices; Sītā hesitates at his feet · Verses 1–

Instruments sounded in the city and the sky; the wicked grew dim and the good kings glad. Gods, kinnaras, men, nāgas and sages gave blessings with cries of victory. The heavenly women danced and sang and flowers fell by the handful; Brahmins chanted the Veda and bards recited praise. Fame spread through earth, the netherworld and heaven: Rāma had won Sītā by breaking the bow. The city's men and women did ārati and poured out wealth, forgetting its worth. Sītā and Rāma shone as a pair, as if beauty and adornment had met in one place. Friends told Sītā to touch the Lord's feet, but she did not, afraid. Remembering what happened to Gautama's wife, she would not touch his feet with her hand, and Rāma smiled in his heart, knowing her unearthly love.

The pair of Sītā and Rāma shone, as if beauty and adornment had met in one place. Her friends said, 'Sītā, touch the Lord's feet,' but she, very afraid, would not touch them.

Remembering what happened to Gautama's wife, she does not touch his feet with her hand. Knowing her unearthly love, Rāma, jewel of the Raghus, smiled in his heart.

Explanation

Gautama's wife Ahalyā was turned to stone by a curse and freed when Rāma's foot touched her; Sītā, remembering it, is afraid to touch his feet with her hand.
