Chapter 261 · Rāma breaks the bow · Verses 1–

Rāma saw Jānakī in great distress; each moment seemed an age to her. One who dies of thirst gets nothing from a lake of nectar afterwards, and rain is useless when the crops have dried. Thinking so, the Lord saw her great love and thrilled. He bowed silently to the guru, lifted the bow with great ease, and it flashed like lightning, then looked like a circle of bow in the sky. No one saw him string it or pull it; all saw only him standing. In that instant he broke the bow in the middle, and a dreadful, harsh roar filled the worlds. The gods, demons and sages covered their ears. The bow was a ship and Rāma's arm-strength the sea; everyone who had boarded it first, out of delusion, sank.

What use is rain when all the crop has dried? Why regret once the time is gone?' Thinking so in his heart, the Lord saw Jānakī and thrilled at her great love.

He bowed to the guru in his mind and with great ease picked up the bow. When he took it, it flashed like lightning, then it became a circle of bow in the sky.

No one saw him lift it, string it or draw it hard; all saw only him standing. At that moment Rāma broke the bow in the middle, and a terrible, harsh roar filled the worlds.

The worlds were filled with a terrible, harsh roar; the sun's horses left their path. The elephants of the directions screamed, the earth shook, and the serpent, boar and tortoise were shaken. Gods, demons and sages put their hands over their ears and, all distressed, wondered. 'Rāma has split the bow,' they cried, 'Victory!'
