Lakṣmaṇa tells the elephants of the directions, the tortoise, the serpent and the boar to hold the earth steady, for Rāma means to break Śiva's bow. When Rāma came near it, the people prayed that their good deeds might help. Everyone's doubt, the foolish kings' pride, Paraśurāma's arrogance, the gods' and sages' timidity, Sītā's worry, Janaka's regret and the queens' fierce grief had all climbed aboard Śiva's bow as if it were a great ship, and Rāma's arm-strength was the boundless sea, with no boatman to take them across. Rāma saw the people standing as if painted in a picture, and knew Sītā was in special distress.लक्ष्मण दिशाओं के हाथियों, कछुए, शेषनाग और वराह से कहते हैं कि धीरज धरकर धरती को थामे रहो ताकि वह डोले नहीं, क्योंकि राम शिव का धनुष तोड़ना चाहते हैं। जब राम धनुष के पास आए, तो स्त्री-पुरुषों ने अपने पुण्यों को याद किया। सबका संदेह और अज्ञान, मूर्ख राजाओं का अभिमान, परशुराम का घमंड, देवताओं और मुनियों की कायरता, सीता की चिंता, जनक का पछतावा और रानियों के कठोर दुख की आग, ये सब शिव-धनुष रूपी बड़ी नाव पर चढ़ बैठे थे, और राम की भुजाओं का बल अपार समुद्र था, जिसे पार करने को कोई खेवैया तैयार न था। राम ने सब लोगों को चित्र में लिखे हुए-से देखा और सीता को विशेष व्याकुल जाना।

'हे दिशाओं के हाथियो, कछुए, शेषनाग और वराह, धीरज धरकर धरती को थामे रहो ताकि वह डोले नहीं। राम शंकर का धनुष तोड़ना चाहते हैं; मेरी आज्ञा सुनकर सावधान हो जाओ।'
'Elephants of the directions, tortoise, serpent and boar: hold the earth steady with courage so that it does not shake. Rāma wishes to break Śaṅkara's bow; hear my order and be ready.'

सब ने शिव के धनुष को बड़ी नाव पाकर साथ ही उस पर चढ़ना ठान लिया था। राम की भुजाओं का बल अपार समुद्र था, और कोई खेवैया उन्हें पार ले जाना नहीं चाहता था।
had all found Śiva's bow a great ship and gone aboard together. Rāma's arm-strength was the boundless sea, and no boatman wished to take them across.
