Chapter 208·The king gives his sons to the sage·Verses 1–
Hearing the unwelcome words, the king trembles and his face loses its colour. He says he got four sons late in life and the sage has spoken without thought. He offers land, cows, wealth, treasure, and even his own life, but says all his sons are dear as life and he cannot give Rāma. How can his tender son face harsh demons? The wise sage is glad at heart at the king's loving words. Vasiṣṭha explains at length, and the king's doubt is destroyed. He calls his two sons, holds them to his heart and advises them, then hands them to the sage. The brothers bow to their mother and set out.

Ask for land, cows, wealth or treasure; I will give you everything today gladly. Nothing is dearer than body and life, and even that, sage, I would give in a moment.

All my sons are dear to me as life, but giving Rāma is more than I can do, Lord. Where are the terrible, harsh demons, and where is my beautiful, tender young son?'
