Chapter 209 · Tāṭakā is killed · Verses 1–

Dark as blue lotus and tamāla, with broad chests and arms, yellow cloth, quivers, bow and arrow, the two brothers walk on. Viśvāmitra feels he has found a great treasure and says he knows the Lord is devoted to brahmins, for he left his father for the sage's sake. As they go the sage points out Tāṭakā, who rushes at them in rage. With one arrow Rāma takes her life, and, seeing her helpless, gives her his own state. The sage recognises his Lord in his heart and gives learning to the treasury of learning, so that hunger and thirst do not touch them, and body and strength shine. He hands over all his weapons and brings the Lord to his hermitage, where he gives him roots and fruit to eat.

Their eyes were reddish, their chests and arms broad, their bodies dark as blue lotus and tamāla tree. They wore yellow cloth at the waist, with fine quivers tied on, and a lovely bow and arrow in both hands.

Seeing the two brothers, one dark and one fair, Viśvāmitra felt he had found a great treasure. 'I know, Lord, that you are devoted to brahmins; you left your father for my sake.'

As they walked on, the sage pointed her out. Hearing them, Tāṭakā rushed at them in rage. With a single arrow he took her life, and, seeing her helpless, gave her his own state.

Then the sage recognised his Lord in his heart, and gave learning to the treasury of learning: the lore by which hunger and thirst do not touch them, and body and strength shine with matchless radiance.

After handing over all his weapons, the sage brought the Lord to his own hermitage, and, knowing it to be out of devotion, gave him a meal of roots, bulbs and fruit.
