Chapter 117 · Delusion over the Lord, like clouds over the sun · Verses 1–

The ignorant do not see their own error and lay delusion on the Lord, as a man looking at a bank of cloud in the sky says the sun is covered. One who looks pressing a finger to his eye sees two moons. Umā, the delusion about Rāma is the same, like darkness, smoke and dust in the sky. Sense-objects, the senses, the presiding gods and the soul: each is aware by the one before it, and the highest light of all is Rāma, beginningless lord of Avadh. The world is lit and Rāma lights it; he is lord of Māyā, home of knowledge and virtue. By his truth the dull Māyā, with the help of delusion, looks like truth. As silver seems in mother-of-pearl, or the sun's rays seem water, though false in all three times, no one can dispel that confusion.

The ignorant do not understand their own error, and lay delusion on the Lord, as someone looking at a mass of cloud in the sky says the sun is covered.

Verse 2

One who looks with a finger pressed to his eye sees two moons. Umā, the delusion people impute to Rāma is the same, like darkness, smoke and dust in the sky.

Verse 3

Sense-objects, the senses, the presiding gods and the soul: each is aware by the one before it. The highest light of them all is that same Rāma, the beginningless lord of Avadh.

Verse 4

The world is lit, and Rāma is the one who lights it; he is lord of Māyā and a home of knowledge and virtue. By his truth the lifeless Māyā, with the help of delusion, appears like truth.

Verse

Like silver seen in mother-of-pearl, or like water seen in the sun's rays: though false in all three times, no one can remove that confusion.
