Chapter 0 · Opening verses · Verses

The second sopāna opens with three Sanskrit ślokas. The first praises Śiva, with Pārvatī on his lap, the Ganges on his head and the moon on his brow. The second praises the lotus face of Rāma, which neither the coronation nor the exile could change. The third bows to Rāma, dark as a blue lotus, with Sītā at his left side and a bow in his hand. A dohā then cleans the mirror of the mind with the dust of the guru's feet and begins to tell Rāma's pure fame.

He on whose lap shines the daughter of the mountain, on whose head is the river of the gods, on whose brow is the young moon, in whose throat is poison, and on whose chest lies the king of snakes. He is adorned with ash, the best of the gods, the lord of all, always present. He is Śarva, who is everywhere, Śiva, white as the moon, the blessed Śaṅkara. May he protect me.

Explanation

Śarva, Śiva and Śaṅkara are all names of Śiva.

The lotus-beauty of Raghunandana's face did not grow bright at the coronation, and it did not fade at the sorrow of living in the forest. May that face always be with me and give me gentle blessings.

Explanation

Raghunandana, joy of the Raghus, is Rāma.

I bow to Rāma, lord of the Raghu line. His soft body is dark as a blue lotus, Sītā is seated at his left, and in his hand are a mighty arrow and a graceful bow.
