Chapter 83 · Ayodhyā in mourning · Verses 1–

Sumantra gives the king's message, begs, and seats Rāma on the chariot. Rāma, Sītā and Lakṣmaṇa leave, bowing in heart to Ayodhyā. Seeing Rāma go, the city is left helpless and the people, torn with grief, follow him. The kind Lord explains to them again and again, but in love they turn back and come again. Ayodhyā now looks terrible, like a dark night of destruction. The men and women are like wild beasts, afraid as they look at each other. Houses are like burning grounds, family like ghosts, sons and friends like the messengers of death. Gardens wither, and rivers and lakes cannot be looked at. Horses, elephants, pet deer, birds of the city, all mourn.

Then Sumantra gave the king's words, pleaded, and seated Rāma on the chariot. Climbing into the chariot with Sītā, the two brothers left, bowing to Ayodhyā in their hearts.

Seeing Rāma go, helpless Ayodhyā was full of grief, and all the people ran after him. The sea of mercy explained to them in many ways, but they turned back for love and came again.

Ayodhyā looked terrible, as if it were the dark night of the end of time. The men and women were like wild beasts, afraid as they looked at one another.

Houses were like burial grounds, the family like ghosts, sons and friends like the servants of Death. The trees and creepers in the gardens withered, and rivers and ponds could not be looked at.
