Chapter 55 · Kausalyā's dilemma · Verses 1–

She could neither keep him nor tell him to go; it was a burning in her heart both ways. Fate is always against everyone: it wrote the moon and wrote Rāhu. Between dharma and love her mind was gripped, like a snake that has caught a musk-rat. If I keep my son and insist, dharma goes and I quarrel with my brother-in-law; if I say go to the forest, it is a great loss. In pain and worry the queen was helpless. Then the wise woman thought of dharma, and that Rāma and Bharata were both her sons alike. Simple by nature, Rāma's mother steadied herself and spoke weighty words: Dear, I give myself for you; you have done well. Father's command is the crown of all duties. Giving the kingdom and then the forest does not trouble me even a little; but without you Bharata, the king and the people will suffer fiercely.
