Chapter 56·"If both of us said go"·Verses 1–
If it were only your father's word, my son, you should not go, for a mother is greater. But if father and mother both told you to go, then the forest is worth a hundred Ayodhyās. The forest gods are your father, the forest goddesses your mother, and the birds and deer will serve your lotus feet. For a king to live in the forest at last is right, and my heart is troubled seeing his age. The forest is fortunate and Ayodhyā unlucky that you, the mark of the Raghus, are leaving it. If I said, take me, my son, you would doubt me in your heart: you are the dearest of all, the life of lives. If you tell me, Mother, I shall go to the forest, then I would sit down and repent hearing your word. I think of this and do not insist with false love. Keep a mother's tie, and do not forget me.
