Chapter 294 · The gods fear again · Verses 1–

Hearing and seeing Bharata's nature, the king and his company praise him: his words are easy and hard, soft, charming and firm, with endless meaning in few letters. Such words, like a face and its reflection in a mirror, cannot be grasped. The king, Bharata, the sage and the company go to where Rāma sits with the gods. Hearing the news, all the people are anxious as fish at the first fresh water. The gods first see the state of the family guru and Videha's love, then Bharata, full of devotion to Rāma, and the selfish gods lose heart, trembling. Everyone seen is full of love for Rāma, and their worry has no measure. Indra, worried, says Rāma is bound by love and reserve, so they should all join to make a trick, or the work is lost.

Hearing Bharata's words and seeing his nature, the king and his company praised him: easy and hard, soft and lovely and firm, with endless meaning in few letters.

As a face and its image in a mirror, such wondrous speech cannot be grasped. The king, Bharata, and the sage with their company went to where Rāma, the moon to the gods' lilies, sat.

Hearing the news, all the people were anxious, like shoals of fish at the coming of fresh water. The gods first looked at the state of the family guru and watched Videha's special love.

Verse 4

Then they looked at Bharata, full of devotion to Rāma, and the selfish gods lost heart, trembling in their hearts. They saw everyone full of love for Rāma, and their worry went beyond reckoning.

Rāma is bound by love and reserve, said Indra in worry. 'All five of you join and make a trick, or the work is spoiled.'
