Chapter 276·The river of grief and love·Verses 1–
Grief is described as a river that washes away the banks of knowledge and detachment; sad words are its streams, sighs its waves, patience the trees on the bank that fall. Wise men and learning are boatmen who cannot row. The forest-dwellers, Kols and Kirātas, tired and lost, watch like travellers. When it reached the ocean of the hermitage, the ocean seemed to heave. Both royal companies, sick with grief, lost knowledge, patience and shame, and wept, praising the dead king's form and character. Men and women plunged in the sea of sorrow blamed fate; gods, siddhas and sages, seeing Videha, saw that no one can cross the river of love. The great sages gave endless counsel, and Vasiṣṭha told Videha to be patient.

It drowns the banks of knowledge and detachment; sad words are the streams and brooks that join it. Worry and sighs are its winds and waves, and patience the great trees on its bank, broken down.

Dire grief is the fierce current; fear and delusion are its whirlpools and endless eddies. The wise and their learning are boatmen and a great boat, but they cannot row, and no way comes to them.

The poor forest-dwellers, Kols and Kirātas, were tired out watching like travellers and lost heart. When it met the ocean of the hermitage, it seemed as if the sea rose in confusion.

Both royal companies were sick with grief; knowledge, patience and shame were gone. They praised the king's form, virtues and character, and wept, plunged in the sea of sorrow.

Plunged in the sea of grief, men and women brooded, greatly distressed. Blaming everyone, they spoke in anger: 'Perverse fate, what have you done!' Gods, siddhas, ascetics, yogis and sages, seeing Videha's state, saw that no one is able to cross the river of love.
