Chapter 234·Bharata's fear; Guha reads the omens·Verses 1–
Bharata thinks that if Rāma abandons him as stained, or honours him taking him as a servant, his only shelter is Rāma's sandals. Rāma is a good master and all the fault is in the servant. In the world the cātaka and the fish are vessels of praise for their rule and love, ever fresh and skilled. Thinking so, Bharata walks on, his limbs slack with shyness and love. It is as if his mother's blame turned him back, while the strength of devotion draws him on like a steady ox. When he thinks of Rāma's nature, his feet quicken. His state is like that of a fish in a stream of water. Seeing his worry and love, Guha forgets himself. Good omens begin, and Guha says: your worry will end and joy will come, though sorrow will follow at the end.

The cātaka and the fish are vessels of the world's praise, for their rule and love are ever fresh and skilled.' Thinking so in his mind, he went along the road, all his limbs slack with shyness and love.

It was as if his mother's blame turned him back, while the strength of devotion, like a steady ox, drew him on. When he thought of Raghunātha's nature, his feet quickened on the path.

What was Bharata's state at that time? Like that of a fish in a flowing stream of water. Seeing Bharata's worry and love, Guha at that moment became bodiless, forgetting himself.
Explanation
The simile is of one carried by a current yet struggling toward its goal, as Bharata is pulled forward by love and held back by fear.

Good omens began, and Guha, hearing and reflecting, said, 'Your worry will end and joy will come; then at the end, sorrow again.'
Explanation
The sorrow at the end is the parting when Rāma refuses to return.
