Chapter 23·Kaikeyī goes to the anger-room·Verses 1–
Kaikeyī knew the hunchback was dear to her as life, and praised her again and again: There is no one in the world who cares for me as you do; you have become my support as I was being swept away. If fate grants my wish tomorrow, I will make you the pupil of my eye. Giving the maid much honour, she went to the anger-room. The seed of trouble, the rainy season of the maid, the earth of Kaikeyī's bad mind: the water of deceit gave a sprout, the two boons were its two leaves, and grief was its fruit. She laid out all the show of anger, ruining herself in her bad counsel while she kept her place as queen. The palace was in uproar of joy, and no one knew this evil plot.
