Chapter 215 · Bharata unmoved by the splendour · Verses 1–

When Bharata sees the sage's power, all the realms of the world-guardians seem small to him. The splendour cannot be told; seeing it, even the wise forget detachment. There are seats, beds, fine clothes and canopies, forests, gardens, birds and animals, flowers and fruits like nectar, and clear lakes of many kinds. Food and drink are pure as nectar, and seeing them the ascetics feel ashamed. Every person has a heavenly cow and a wishing tree, which make Indra and his queen long for them. It is spring, with the three kinds of breeze blowing, and the four aims of life are easy for all. Garlands, sandal and the pleasures of women and others fill the people with joy and wonder. Wealth is the female cakravāka, Bharata the male; the sage's command was their keeper, and kept them that night in the cage of the hermitage until dawn.

When Bharata saw the sage's power, all the realms of the guardians of the world seemed small to him. The happy abundance cannot be described; seeing it the wise forget detachment.

Wealth was the female cakravāka, Bharata the male, and the sage's command the keeper who plays with them. That night he kept them in the cage of the hermitage until the morning came.

Explanation

The cakravāka pair is parted every night; so Bharata and the splendour stayed apart, and he was untouched by it.
