Chapter 194 · The power of Rāma's name · Verses 1–

As Bharata embraces him with great love, the people envy such a way of love. 'Blessed, blessed!' is the sound, a root of blessing, and the gods praise and rain flowers. The poet says that this man, low in every way by custom and by the Vedas, whose very shadow, if touched, requires a bath, is held in arms by Rāma's younger brother, who thrills with joy. Those who yawn saying 'Rāma, Rāma' do not face heaps of sin. Rāma took this man to his heart and purified the world with his family. The Karmanāśā river, once it falls into the Gaṅgā, is taken by everyone on the head. Vālmīki is known to have become equal to Brahmā by chanting the name backwards. The dohā says the outcaste, the Śabara, the Khasa, the Yavana, the dull, the wicked, the Kol and the Kirāta become supremely pure and famous in the world by saying 'Rāma'.

As Bharata embraced him with great love, the people envied such a way of love. 'Blessed, blessed!' went the sound, a root of blessing, and the gods praised him and rained flowers.

Verse 2

In custom and in the Vedas he was low in every way, a man whose shadow, if touched, requires a bath. Rāma's younger brother took him in his arms, and met him with his body thrilling.

Verse 3

Those who yawn while saying 'Rāma, Rāma' do not face heaps of sin. This man Rāma himself took to his heart and made the world holy together with his family.

Verse 4

When the water of the Karmanāśā falls into the Gaṅgā, who does not carry it on the head? The world knows that Vālmīki, chanting the name backwards, became equal to Brahman.

Explanation

The Karmanāśā is a river held to be unclean; Vālmīki is said to have chanted 'mara', the name reversed.
