Chapter 171·The sage in the assembly·Verses 1–
Bharata's deeds for his father cannot be told even by a hundred thousand mouths. The sage chooses an auspicious day and calls the ministers and all the notables. They all sit in the royal court, and the two brothers are called. Vasiṣṭha seats Bharata near him and speaks words of policy and dharma. First the sage tells everything Kaikeyī did in her crookedness. He praises the king's vow of dharma and truth, by which he gave up his body to keep his love. Telling Rāma's goodness and nature, the sage's eyes fill and his hair stands on end. Then he tells of the love of Lakṣmaṇa and Sītā, and the wise sage is lost in sorrow and love. In the dohā the lord of sages says with a sigh, 'Hear, Bharata: fate is strong. Loss and gain, life and death, fame and shame, are all in its hand.'
