The king's body is bathed as the Vedas direct, and a most wonderful bier is made. Bharata falls at the mothers' feet and keeps them back, since the queens wished to see the king. Great loads of sandalwood and aloe come, with endless sweet scents. A pyre is built on the bank of the Sarayū, lovely like a stairway to heaven. In this way the whole cremation is done, and Bharata bathes by the rule and offers water with sesame. After studying all the smṛtis, Vedas and Purāṇas, he does the ten-day rites. Wherever the sage gives an order, he carries it out in a thousand ways. Purified, he gives all gifts: cows, horses, elephants and many vehicles. In this way they did all the funeral rites, and Bharata bathed by the rule and offered water with sesame. After searching all the smṛtis, Vedas and Purāṇas, he performed the rites of the tenth day.
