Kausalyā takes Bharata to her heart in her simple way, as if Rāma had come back. She then embraces Śatrughna, and sorrow and love do not fit in her heart. Seeing her nature, everyone says that a mother of Rāma could be nothing else. She sits Bharata in her lap, wipes his tears and speaks soft words. She asks him again to take courage and give up grief, knowing it is a bad time. He should feel no loss or shame, knowing that the course of time and karma cannot be changed. He should blame no one: fate has turned against her in every way, and who knows what it wants, since it has kept her alive even through such sorrow. In the dohā she tells how, at his father's order, Rāma took off ornaments and clothes without joy or regret and put on bark-cloth.
