Chapter 164·Bharata before Kausalyā·Verses 1–
Seeing Bharata, Kausalyā rises and runs, then faints and falls. Bharata is greatly distressed at the sight, forgets his own state and falls at her feet. He asks her to show him his father and where Sītā, Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa are. He asks why Kaikeyī was born into the world, and if born, why was she not barren. She gave birth to the stain of the family, a vessel of shame and an enemy of his loved ones. He asks who in the three worlds is as unlucky as he, for whose sake she has come to this state. His father has gone to heaven, Raghuvara is in the forest, and he alone is the cause of all this misfortune. He says shame on him: he has become like the bamboo that burns the forest, with unbearable fire, sorrow and blame. In the dohā Kausalyā steadies herself on hearing his soft words, lifts him, holds him to her heart and weeps.
