The king takes Sumantra to his heart, like a drowning man who finds some support. He seats him near, lovingly, with eyes full of tears, and asks for news of Rāma, Raghunātha, Lakṣmaṇa and Vaidehī. He asks whether Sumantra brought them back or they went to the forest. The minister's eyes fill with tears. The king asks again for the message of Sītā, Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa and grieves, remembering Rāma's beauty, goodness and nature. He says that when he gave the order of exile, Rāma felt neither joy nor dismay, and yet he himself did not die on parting from such a son: who is as great a sinner as he? The dohā begs Sumantra to take him to wherever Rāma, Sītā and Lakṣmaṇa are, or else his life wants to leave.

The king took Sumantra to his heart, like a drowning man finding some support. He seated him near, with love, and the king asked, his eyes full of tears:

'Tell me how Rāma is, my loving friend. Where are Raghunātha, Lakṣmaṇa and Vaidehī? Did you bring them back, or did they go to the forest?' Hearing this, the minister's eyes filled with water.

Distraught with grief, the king asked again: 'Tell me the message of Sītā, Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa.' Remembering again and again Rāma's beauty, goodness and nature, the king grieved in his heart.

'I, the king, ordered his exile, and hearing it his mind felt neither joy nor dismay. And my breath did not leave when I was parted from such a son. Who is as great a sinner as I?'
