Chapter 148·The king on the floor·Verses 1–
The queens ask Sumantra in great distress, but he cannot answer and his voice fails. He hears nothing and sees nothing. They ask each other where the king is. The maids see the minister's state and take him to Kausalyā's house. There Sumantra sees the king like the moon that has lost its nectar. The king has no seat, no bed and no jewels, and lies on the ground, very dull. He sighs again and again, as Yayāti did after falling from heaven, and as Sampāti did with burnt wings. He calls 'Rāma, Rāma', and then 'Rāma, Lakṣmaṇa, Vaidehī'. The minister says 'Victory, long life' and bows full length. Hearing it, the king rises in distress and asks where Rāma is.

Every moment his chest was full of grief, like Sampāti fallen with burnt wings. He cried 'Rāma, Rāma, my beloved Rāma!', and then 'Rāma, Lakṣmaṇa, Vaidehī!'

The minister saw him, said 'Victory! Long life!' and bowed full length on the ground. Hearing it, the king rose in distress and said: 'Tell me, Sumantra, where is Rāma?'
