Chapter 147·The empty chariot at the gate·Verses 1–
As Sumantra goes on regretting, the chariot soon reaches the bank of the Tamasā. He sends the Niṣādas back with a polite word, and they return, falling at his feet in grief. The minister is ashamed to enter the city, as if he had killed a guru, a Brahmin or a cow. He spends the day under a tree and finds his chance at evening. He enters Ayodhyā in the dark, leaves the chariot at the door and goes inside. Those who hear the news come to see the chariot at the king's door. They recognise it and see the horses in distress, their bodies melting like hail in the sun. The people of the city are restless like fish in shrinking water. Hearing that the minister has come, the women's quarters grow restless, and to them the palace feels like a dwelling of ghosts.
