Guha sees the charioteer off and goes back. The grief of parting cannot be told. The Niṣādas take the chariot toward Ayodhyā, sunk in sorrow moment by moment. Sumantra, wretched with grief, curses a life without Rāma. He says this vile body will not last in the end anyway, and it did not even win fame by dying when Rāma left. He blames his breath for being a vessel of shame and wonders why it does not leave. He wrings his hands and beats his head, like a miser who has lost his wealth, or a soldier who swore a vow, was called a hero, and then ran from the battle. The dohā compares his sorrow to a learned and good Brahmin who has drunk wine by mistake.

Sumantra, wretched with grief, thought: 'Shame on a life without Raghuvīra. This vile body will not last in the end anyway, since it earned no fame by dying when Raghuvīra left.

My breath has become a vessel of shame and sin. Why does it not leave? Ah, my foolish mind has missed its moment. Even now my heart does not break in two.'

The minister's sorrow was like that of a wise Brahmin, learned in the Vedas, respected, good and well-born, who has drunk wine by mistake.
