The minister burns inside like a high-born, wise and faithful wife whom her husband has left because of fate. His eyes fill, his sight dims, he cannot hear, his mind is confused, his lips dry and his mouth sticks, and his life does not leave since the door of his appointed time is shut. His face is so pale that no one can bear to look, as if he had killed his father and mother. Loss and shame fill his mind like a sinner's dread on the road to Yama's city. He cannot speak. He wonders what he will see in Ayodhyā. Everyone who sees the chariot without Rāma will shrink from him. When the distressed men and women run to question him, he will answer with a thunderbolt set on his heart.

Like a high-born wife, good and wise, faithful to her husband in deed, mind and word, whom fate has made her husband leave, such a fierce burning was in the minister's heart.
Verse 2

His eyes were wet and his sight grew dim. He could not hear with his ears; his mind was in turmoil and lost. His lips dried and his mouth stuck, yet his life would not go, for the door of his appointed time was shut.
Verse 3

His colour was gone, so that he could not be looked at, as though he had killed his father and mother. Loss and shame filled his mind, like a sinner's dread on the road to Yama's city.
Verse 4

No words came, and he repented in his heart: 'What shall I see when I go to Ayodhyā? Whoever sees the chariot without Rāma will shrink on seeing me.
