Chapter 143·Sumantra is put in the chariot·Verses 1–
Niṣāda steadies himself and tells Sumantra to give up his grief. He says Sumantra is learned and knows the highest good, and should take heart, seeing that fate has turned its face from them. With many soft words he forces the minister into the chariot. But the minister, weak with grief and with the pain of Rāma's parting in his heart, cannot drive. The horses rear and will not walk, as if wild deer had been yoked to the chariot. They stumble and fall and look back, upset with the hurt of parting. If anyone says the names Rāma, Lakṣmaṇa or Vaidehī, the horses neigh and look lovingly at him. Who can tell the horses' state in parting, like a snake without its jewel? Seeing the minister and the horses, Niṣāda was overcome with grief and called four good servants to go with them as drivers.

Saying many things in a soft voice, he seated the minister in the chariot by force. But grief had made the minister weak, and with Rāma's parting like a sharp pain in his heart he could not drive the horses.

The horses kick and will not go along the road, as if wild deer had been brought and yoked to the chariot. They stumble and fall, and look back again, upset with the sharp pain of parting.

Whoever says 'Rāma', 'Lakṣmaṇa' or 'Vaidehī', the horses neigh and look at him with love. How can the state of the horses in their parting be told? They are restless like a snake without its jewel.
