Chapter 142·Sumantra at Śṛṅgaverapura·Verses 1–
Rāma looks after Sītā and Lakṣmaṇa as the eyelid guards the eye, and Lakṣmaṇa and Sītā serve Rāma as a man who forgets himself serves his body. The poet says Rāma lives happily in the forest, doing good to birds, animals, gods and ascetics. He then turns back to Sumantra's side of the story. Niṣāda, after leaving Rāma, went back and saw the chariot with the minister. Seeing the minister in grief, Niṣāda's own sorrow grew past telling. The minister fell on the ground calling the names of Rāma, Sītā and Lakṣmaṇa. The horses looked towards the south, neighing, restless like birds without wings. They would not eat grass or drink water, and tears ran from their eyes. Seeing the horses of Rāma, all the Niṣādas were upset.

The Lord looks after Sītā and Lakṣmaṇa as the eyelids look after the eye. Lakṣmaṇa and Sītā serve Rāma as a man who has forgotten himself serves his body.

In this way the Lord lives happily in the forest, doing good to birds, animals, gods and ascetics. I have told you of Rāma's lovely going to the forest. Now hear how it went in Ayodhyā with Sumantra.

Niṣāda, having seen the Lord off, returned and came to see the chariot with the minister. Seeing the minister in distress, Niṣāda's own sorrow could not be told.
