Chapter Twelve · Sarasvatī and Mantharā · Verses 1–

Sarasvatī stood regretting: she had become a lotus-bed in a winter night. The gods begged her again: Mother, you have no blame at all. Rāma is free of joy and grief, and you know his greatness. Beings share pleasure and pain by their deeds, so go to Ayodhyā for the gods' sake. She was ashamed and pressed her feet again and again, then went, thinking how low the gods' minds were: they live high but act low, and cannot bear another's wealth. She thought too of what came after, and that wise poets would not blame her. She came to Ayodhyā glad at heart, like an evil planet that brings hard grief. There was a dull-witted maid of Kaikeyī, named Mantharā. Making her a casket of ill fame, Sarasvatī turned her mind and went away.
