Mantharā saw the city adorned and heard the music of joy. She asked the people what the festival was, and when she heard it was Rāma's coronation, her heart burned. The low, evil-minded woman wondered how to spoil it that very night, like a cruel hunter-woman who sees honey and looks for a way to take it. She went to Bharata's mother, her face heavy. The queen laughed and asked: Why so low today? Mantharā gave no answer and only sighed, and the woman, practised in tricks, let tears fall. The queen said with a laugh: Has Lakṣmaṇa taught you a lesson? Even then the sinful maid said nothing, only breathing out like a black snake. Afraid, the queen asked: Why do you not say if all is well with Rāma and the king, and with Lakṣmaṇa, Bharata and Śatrughna?
