Chapter 114 · Villagers run to see Rāma · Verses 1–

When Sītā, Lakṣmaṇa and Rāma pass close to a village, young and old, men and women hear of it and at once run, leaving their housework. Seeing the beauty of Rāma, Lakṣmaṇa and Sītā, they win the fruit of their eyes and are happy. Their eyes fill with water, their bodies thrill, and they are lost in the sight of the two heroes. Their state cannot be told, like poor men who have found a heap of jewels. They call to each other, saying: take the gain for your eyes this very moment. Some, seeing Rāma, are filled with love and follow, gazing as they go. Some fix the picture in their hearts through the eyes on the road, and their bodies, minds and speech go slack. The dohā: some see a nice shade under a banyan, spread soft grass and leaves, and say: rest a little, take away the weariness, then go now or in the morning.

Their state cannot be told, like poor men who have found a heap of wishing-jewels. They call to one another and teach: 'Take the gain of your eyes this very moment.'

Seeing Rāma, some are filled with love and follow after him, gazing as they go. Some take the picture in through the eyes on the road into their hearts, and go limp in body, mind and speech.
