Chapter 113 · Blessed are the roadside villages · Verses 1–

The serpents and the gods long for the towns and villages along the road: what good deed, in whose time, made them so blessed, holy and lovely? Wherever Rāma's feet walk, even Amarāvatī, Indra's city, is not their equal. The dwellers near the road are heaps of merit, and the people of heaven praise them. Those who fill their eyes with the sight of Rāma, with Sītā and Lakṣmaṇa, the cloud-dark one; those streams and lakes that Rāma bathes in, the gods themselves praise. Under whatever tree the Lord sits, the wishing-tree praises it. The earth, touched by the dust of Rāma's feet, thinks herself blessed. The dohā: clouds give shade, gods rain flowers and look on, as hills, forests, birds and deer see Rāma go on his way.

The towns and villages that lie along the road are envied by the serpents and the cities of the gods. 'Which good man, at what hour, made them dwellings so blessed, holy and lovely?'

Wherever Rāma's feet go, there is nothing like those places even in Amarāvatī. The people living near the road are heaps of merit, and the dwellers of heaven praise them.

Those who gaze their fill at Rāma, cloud-dark, with Sītā and Lakṣmaṇa, and the ponds and rivers where Rāma bathes, the gods praise them.

Under whatever tree the Lord sits, the wishing-trees praise it. And the earth, touched by the dust of Rāma's lotus feet, thinks herself greatly blessed.

Clouds give shade, the gods rain flowers and watch with longing, as hills, forests, birds and deer see Rāma go along the road.
