खर दूषन पहिं गइ बिलपाता
Without nose and ears, Śūrpaṇakhā looks like a mountain with streams of red ore. She goes to Khara and Dūṣaṇa weeping and shames them for their weakness. They ask what happened, and when she tells them, the demons raise an army. They march in a swarm like black hills with wings, in countless shapes and with all kinds of weapons, with Śūrpaṇakhā in front as a bad omen. They pay no heed to the many bad signs, and shout and fly in the sky. Rāma sends Lakṣmaṇa with Sītā to a mountain cave and takes up his bow.नाक-कान कटी शूर्पणखा ऐसी भयंकर लगती थी जैसे पहाड़ से गेरू की धारा बह रही हो। वह रोती हुई खर-दूषण के पास गई और बोली, धिक्कार है तुम्हारे बल को। उन्होंने पूछा तो उसने सब बताया। राक्षसों ने सेना बनाई और झुंड के झुंड दौड़े, जैसे पंख वाले काले पहाड़ों का समूह। कई वाहन, कई आकार और अनेक आयुध लिए, शूर्पणखा को आगे किए हुए जिसका रूप अशुभ था। अपार अपशकुन होते हैं पर मृत्यु के वश में किसी ने ध्यान नहीं दिया। वे गरजते, डाँटते, आकाश में उड़ते और सेना देखकर वीर बहुत प्रसन्न होते हैं। कोई कहता है दोनों भाइयों को जीवित पकड़ो, स्त्री छुड़ा लो। आकाश में धूल भर गई। राम ने लक्ष्मण को बुलाकर कहा कि सीता को लेकर पहाड़ की गुफा में जाओ, भयंकर राक्षसों की सेना आई है। लक्ष्मण चले और राम ने कठिन धनुष चढ़ाया।

नाक-कान कटी वह भयंकर दिखती थी, जैसे पर्वत से गेरू की धारा बह रही हो। वह रोती हुई खर-दूषण के पास गई: 'धिक्कार है तुम्हारे बल और पौरुष को, भाई।'
Without nose and ears she looked fearful, like a mountain with a stream of red ore. She went to Khara and Dūṣaṇa, wailing: 'Shame on your strength and manhood, brother!'

They had many vehicles and shapes, and carried many weapons, fierce and endless. They put Śūrpaṇakhā in front, an evil sight, without ears or nose.

अपार अपशकुन होते थे, पर मृत्यु के वश में सबने उनकी परवाह नहीं की। वे गरजते, डाँटते, आकाश में उड़ते थे और सेना देखकर योद्धा बहुत प्रसन्न थे।
Endless bad omens appeared, but all of them, helpless in death's hands, took no notice. They roared, threatened, flew into the sky, and the warriors were delighted to see the host.

'जानकी को लेकर पर्वत की गुफा में जाओ; भयंकर राक्षसों की सेना आई है। सावधान रहना।' प्रभु की वाणी सुनकर लक्ष्मण धनुष हाथ में लेकर श्री के साथ चले।
'Take Jānakī to a mountain cave. A fierce demon army has come.' Hearing the Lord's words, Lakṣmaṇa went with Śrī and the bow in his hand, staying alert.

कठोर धनुष चढ़ाकर और सिर की जटाओं को बाँधकर वे कैसे सुशोभित हुए, जैसे मरकत पर्वत पर करोड़ों बिजलियाँ खेलती हों या दो नाग लिपटे हों। कमर में तरकश कसकर, विशाल भुजाओं में धनुष और बाण सँभालकर, वे ऐसे देख रहे थे जैसे सिंह हाथियों की टोली को देखता है।
He strung the hard bow and bound his matted hair into a knot; how lovely he looked, like lightning playing on a mountain of emerald, or two serpents. With quiver tied at his waist, broad arms, bow and arrows in hand, he looked on the host like a lion looking at a herd of elephants.

सब योद्धा एक साथ 'पकड़ो, पकड़ो' कहते हुए दौड़कर आ गए, जैसे अकेले बालक सूर्य को देखकर राक्षस घेरते हैं।
The fighters came in a mass, shouting 'Catch them, catch them,' as demons surround the sun when they see a small boy alone.
