Rāma tells the sage that nothing is hidden from him and asks for the counsel to destroy the demons who trouble the sages. Agastya smiles: why does the Lord ask him? He knows Rāma's greatness only a little, through serving him. The world is a great fig tree of Rāma's māyā, its fruits the many universes, and the creatures inside it are its insects, whom even Death fears. Yet Rāma asks like a man. The sage asks for one boon: that Rāma live in his heart with Sītā and his brother, and give him unbroken devotion, detachment and company of saints. Then he sends Rāma to Pañcavaṭī, a lovely place in the Daṇḍaka forest, to end the sage's curse and be kind to the sages. On the way Rāma meets the king of vultures, and settles by the Godāvarī in a hut of leaves.

The moving and unmoving creatures are like insects inside it. They live within and know nothing else. These fruit-eaters are fierce and dreadful, and even Death is always afraid of you.

'Lord, there is a very lovely place called Pañcavaṭī, pure. Make the Daṇḍaka forest holy, and end the terrible curse laid by a great sage.
Explanation
The curse was Gautama's: the forest had once been a prosperous land, and was cursed to become a jungle.

A fig (ūmara) has tiny insects inside it, so it is a common image for creatures living inside a world they cannot see beyond.
