Chapter Eleven · Śrī Lakṣmī and Her Mantras · Verses 1–66

The eleventh paṭala turns to Śrī, the goddess of fortune, continuing this text's practice of devoting a full chapter to each of the great goddesses in turn. It opens by teaching her ten-syllabled mantra — its seer, metre, and deity, a striking meditation-image of her golden form bathed by a pair of elephants pouring water from their raised vessels, and the nine attendant powers said to surround her: Glory, Elevation, Beauty, Delight, Fame, Humility, Nourishment, Attraction, and Prosperity. A long catalogue follows of what specific japa-counts and fire-offerings accomplish, growing steadily more vivid: standing in a river up to the chest while meditating on Śrī resting in the sun frees one from poverty outright; and in its most memorable passage, a devotee who plants and tends his own bilva tree, offering its leaves, flowers, fruit, branches, and finally its roots in sequence, is promised he will see the very form of the goddess, and that misfortune will never again touch his family. A second, separate mantra follows, its seed-syllables explained through the text's characteristic etymological word-play, surrounded by a fourfold circle of attendant deities that includes eight arrow-like qualities of great Fortune — Passion, Discord, Victory, Delight, and their companions — and the four classical forms of Viṣṇu. The paṭala's centre of gravity then shifts to the Śrī-sūkta, the ancient Vedic hymn to fortune, walked through in full ritual detail: which seer belongs to which verse, which metre to which group, a whole-body installation of the hymn's syllables from crown to feet, and an exacting eleven-day rite culminating in a striking image — waiting for a lotus to bloom, and the instant it opens, placing fresh butter within it before offering the whole flower to the fire. A roster of thirty-two names by which Śrī may be addressed closes the ritual section proper. The paṭala's final movement turns unexpectedly personal: a list of everyday observances for anyone who wishes fortune to stay near them, a frank catalogue of the kinds of women such a person should never associate with, and finally a gentle, human portrait of the ideal "seeker of Indirā" — calm, generous in speech, faithful to his own wife, content, and beloved by all who know him.

Now the mantra-procedure of Śrī will be briefly declared, for the welfare of the world, together with its limb-divisions, and the sequence of recitation, worship, and fire-oblation, for the complete deliverance from misfortune.

Having thus meditated on Śrī, at the previously-constructed seat, one should first worship the lotus and so forth with its limbs; with the eight śaktis, each petal in turn; at its end, with the world-guardians — thus, by rule, one should worship for prosperity.
