Chapter Seven·Deciding the First Tithi, and the Tithi Named in a Saṅkalpa·Verses 1–6
प्रतिपन्निर्णयोद्देशः
The bright first tithi is taken pierced by the day before if it holds the afternoon — even, Mādhava says, if it holds only the evening — and otherwise joined with the second; the dark first is always taken joined with the second; and for a fast, in either fortnight, it is taken pierced by the day before. Then the rules that matter for every saṅkalpa. A fast on an afternoon first tithi is still vowed in the morning. The saṅkalpa names the tithi the rite belongs to, not the one that happens to be current: the first, not the new moon, even if the first has not yet begun; Ekādaśī, not Dvādaśī, when the Ekādaśī fast is kept on a pure Dvādaśī — though the daily rites of that day name the tithi actually present. And the saṅkalpa is made before sunrise at dawn, or in the first two of the three muhūrtas after sunrise; never in the third.शुक्ल प्रतिपदा अपराह्ण में हो तो पूर्वविद्धा ली जाती है — माधव के अनुसार सायाह्न में हो तब भी — नहीं तो द्वितीया-युक्त; कृष्ण प्रतिपदा सदा द्वितीया-युक्त; और उपवास में दोनों पक्षों में पूर्वविद्धा। फिर वे नियम जो हर संकल्प के काम के हैं। अपराह्ण वाली प्रतिपदा का उपवास भी संकल्प सुबह ही होता है। संकल्प में वह तिथि कही जाती है जिसका कर्म है, न कि जो उस समय चल रही हो: प्रतिपदा, अमावस्या नहीं, भले प्रतिपदा अभी न आई हो; शुद्ध द्वादशी में एकादशी का उपवास हो तो एकादशी, द्वादशी नहीं — पर उस दिन के सन्ध्या आदि कर्मों में वही तिथि कही जाती है जो उस समय हो। और संकल्प सूर्योदय से पहले उषःकाल में, या सूर्योदय के बाद के तीन मुहूर्तों में से पहले दो में होता है; तीसरे में कभी नहीं।

अब प्रतिपदा का निर्णय। पूजा, व्रत आदि में शुक्ल प्रतिपदा अपराह्ण में हो तो पूर्वविद्धा ली जाती है। माधवाचार्य कहते हैं कि सायाह्न में हो तब भी पूर्वा ही। नहीं तो द्वितीया-युक्त ली जाती है। कृष्ण प्रतिपदा सदा द्वितीया-युक्त ही ली जाती है।
Now the first tithi. For worship, vows and the like, the bright first tithi is taken pierced by the day before if it holds the afternoon. संकल्प के समय प्रतिपदा आदि तिथि न हो तब भी संकल्प में प्रतिपदा आदि ही कहनी चाहिए, अमावस्या आदि नहीं।
Even if the first tithi (or whichever tithi the rite belongs to) has not yet begun at the time of the saṅkalpa, the saṅkalpa names that tithi, not the new moon or whatever tithi is still running.

इसी प्रकार "शुद्ध द्वादशी में उपवास करे" जैसे स्थलों में एकादशी-व्रत के संकल्प, पूजा आदि में एकादशी ही कहनी चाहिए, द्वादशी नहीं। उस दिन के सन्ध्या, अग्निहोत्र आदि दूसरे कर्मों में उस-उस समय रहने वाली द्वादशी आदि ही कहनी चाहिए — ऐसा मुझे लगता है।
In the same way, where a text says "a pure Dvādaśī is to be fasted" and the like, the saṅkalpa, worship and other acts of the Ekādaśī vow name Ekādaśī, not Dvādaśī. In other rites that day, such as sandhyā and agnihotra, one names Dvādaśī or whatever tithi is actually present at that time — so it seems to me.
