Chapter One · The Determination of Time · Verses 1–4.8

The book opens. Kāśīnātha bows to Viṭṭhala, to Śaṅkara and the gods, to the planets, to his teacher and to his parents, and to the authorities before him; then he states his method plainly — he has read the earlier nibandhas, he follows the order of the Nirṇayasindhu, and he writes for a beginner, mostly leaving the source-quotations out. Then the first business of a book about dharma: time itself, because nothing can be done until it is known when. Time is of six kinds — year, half-year, season, month, fortnight and day — and each is defined and measured. The year has five forms: the lunar of three hundred and fifty-four days, or thirteen months when an intercalary month falls; the solar of three hundred and sixty-five; the civil of three hundred and sixty; the sidereal of three hundred and twenty-four; and the year of Jupiter, of three hundred and sixty-one. The sixty names — Prabhava, Vibhava, Śukla and the rest — belong to the lunar year alone. And in the saṅkalpa that opens a rite it is the lunar year that is to be named, no other. The half-year is southern or northern, counted from the Sun's entry into Cancer and into Capricorn. The season is solar or lunar, six either way; the lunar season is the one to name in śrauta and smārta rites, and in an intercalary month it runs a little short of ninety days. The month has four forms, and of these the lunar month is the one a rite remembers — Caitra and the rest, counted from the bright fortnight, though north of the Vindhyas the month that begins with the dark fortnight is taken instead. Last, the two fortnights, and the day of sixty ghaṭikās.

I bow to Śrī Viṭṭhala, the supreme Person — an ocean of kindness, quickly pleased, who gives the helpless what they long for and dries up the sea of heaped-up sin; who stole Śrī Rukmiṇī's mind, whose deeds have no end, and who moves within the heart.

The year is of five kinds: lunar, solar, civil, sidereal and the year of Jupiter. The lunar year runs through twelve months named Caitra and the rest, each beginning at the first day of the bright fortnight and ending at the new moon, and comes to three hundred and fifty-four days — or to thirteen months when an intercalary month falls. The sixty names — Prabhava, Vibhava, Śukla and so on — belong to the lunar year alone.

When the Sun has passed through the twelve signs beginning with Aries, the solar year is completed, in three hundred and sixty-five days. The civil year is of three hundred and sixty days. The sidereal year is made of the twelve nakṣatra months described below, and comes to three hundred and twenty-four days. When Jupiter has passed through any one of the signs beginning with Aries, that is the year of Jupiter, and it is of three hundred and sixty-one days.

The half-year is of two kinds, southern and northern. From the Sun's entry into Cancer, through its passage across six signs, is the southern half-year. From its entry into Capricorn, through six signs again, is the northern.

The season is of two kinds, solar and lunar; it is reckoned from Pisces, or else from Aries. The solar season is the Sun's passage through two signs, and there are six of them, named Vasanta and the rest. The lunar season runs two months at a time, counted from Caitra, and bears the same six names. In an intercalary month the lunar season runs a little short of ninety days. In śrauta and smārta rites it is the lunar season that is commended for naming.

The month is of four kinds: lunar, solar, civil and sidereal. The lunar month either begins at the first day of the bright fortnight and ends at the new moon, or begins at the first day of the dark fortnight and ends at the full moon. Of these two the one beginning with the bright fortnight is primary; the one beginning with the dark fortnight is to be taken only north of the Vindhyas. It is this lunar month, named Caitra and the rest, that is to be named at the beginning of a rite. Some apply the names Caitra and the rest to the solar months, counting from Pisces. The solar month runs from one entry of the Sun into a sign up to the next. The civil month is of thirty days. The sidereal month is the Moon's passage through the twenty-seven nakṣatras beginning with Aśvinī.
