Bṛhat Parāśara Horā Śāstra अध्यायाः Chapter 2

Chapter Two · The Telling of the Incarnations · Verses 1–13

Maitreya asks whether Viṣṇu's incarnations such as Rāma and Kṛṣṇa carry a portion of the jīva along with the Paramātmā. Parāśara answers that Rāma, Kṛṣṇa, Narasiṃha and Varāha are full incarnations, while all the others carry a jīva-portion as well. The unborn Supreme Self takes many such forms, appearing through the grahas to give every being the fruit of its own karma, to destroy the strength of the demons, to increase the strength of the gods, and to establish dharma. Parāśara then sets out, graha by graha, the incarnation each carries: Rāma from the Sun, Kṛṣṇa from the Moon, Narasiṃha from Mars, Buddha from Mercury, Vāmana from Jupiter, Paraśurāma from Venus, Kūrma from Saturn, Varāha from Rāhu, and the Fish from Ketu. Those with a greater share of the Paramātmā are called khecara, celestial beings, while those with a greater share of the jīva are simply called jīvas. The incarnations that arise from the grahas dissolve back into them once their work is done, and the jīva-portions that issue from them become men and other beings, who in turn dissolve back into the unmanifest. Parāśara closes by saying that only jyotiṣa can reveal what has been and what is to come, so it must be studied — especially by brāhmaṇas — and that whoever condemns this science out of ignorance suffers the hell called Raurava and is born blind in his next life.
