The seventh sopāna opens with three Sanskrit ślokas. The first praises Rāma as he returns on the Puṣpaka car, dark as a peacock's neck, in yellow cloth, bow in hand, with the monkeys and his brother around him. The second praises his soft lotus feet, and the third praises Śiva, the lord of Ambikā. Four dohās then show Ayodhyā on the last day of the fourteen years: the people are worn thin with waiting, good omens appear, and Bharata's right eye and arm begin to twitch.

I bow to Rāma, the lord of Jānakī, best of the Raghus, who rides the Puṣpaka car. His body is blue like the neck of a peacock, and on his chest is the mark of the brahmin's lotus foot. He is full of splendour, clothed in yellow, lotus-eyed, and always very gracious. In his hand are an arrow and a bow, a host of monkeys is with him, and his brother serves him. He is worthy of praise, and I bow to him always.

Explanation

The brahmin's footprint is the mark of Bhṛgu's kick, which Viṣṇu bore on his chest as a sign of his patience.

The two lotus feet of the lord of Kosala are lovely and soft. Brahmā and Mahādeva bow to them. Jānakī's lotus hands caress them, and they are the bees that settle in the minds of those who meditate.

I bow to Śaṅkara, the lord of Ambikā, who is fair and beautiful like the kunda flower, the moon and the conch. He gives all that one wishes for. He is full of mercy, with lovely lotus eyes, and he sets us free from Kāma, the bodiless.

Only one day was left of the time he had set. The people of the city were in great distress. Men and women, thin in body with longing for Rāma, were anxious everywhere.

Bharata's right eye and right arm kept twitching. He took it as a good sign, felt great joy, and began to think.
