In that Kali age he went to Kosala and was born a śūdra. He was a servant of Śiva in mind, deed and word, but scorned other gods and was proud, drunk with wealth, very talkative, hard in mind and full of vanity. Though he lived in Raghupati's capital, he did not then know any of its glory. Now he knows the power of Ayodhyā, as the Vedas and Purāṇas say: whoever lives in Ayodhyā in any birth is sure to be devoted to Rāma. People know Ayodhyā's power only when Rāma with the bow lives in the heart. The Kali age is hard, with men and women given to sin. The dohās say that the dirt of Kali has swallowed all dharma, good books have vanished, and the proud have made up many paths from their own minds. People have become deluded and greedy, good deeds are devoured; so listen, Garuḍa, treasure of knowledge, while I tell you some of the dharma of Kali.उस कलियुग में वे कोसलपुर जाकर शूद्र का शरीर पाकर जन्मे। वे मन, कर्म और वाणी से शिव के सेवक थे, पर दूसरे देवताओं की निंदा करने वाले और अभिमानी थे; धन के मद में मतवाले, बहुत बोलने वाले, उग्र बुद्धि और विशाल घमंड वाले। यद्यपि वे रघुपति की राजधानी में रहे, तब भी उसकी कुछ महिमा नहीं जानी। अब उन्होंने अवध का प्रभाव जाना, जैसा वेद, आगम और पुराण गाते हैं: जो किसी भी जन्म में अवध में बसता है, वह निश्चय राम-परायण होता है। अवध का प्रभाव तब जाना जाता है जब हृदय में धनुषधारी राम बसते हैं। कलिकाल कठिन है, जिसमें सब स्त्री-पुरुष पाप में लगे हैं। दोहों में कहा गया है कि कलि के मल ने सारे धर्म ग्रस लिए, सद्ग्रंथ लुप्त हो गए, दम्भियों ने अपनी बुद्धि से कल्पना करके बहुत से पंथ चला दिए। सब लोग मोहवश और लोभ से ग्रसित हो गए, शुभ कर्म खा लिए गए; हे ज्ञान के निधि गरुड़, मैं कुछ कलि के धर्म कहता हूँ।

उस कलियुग में मैं कोसलपुर जाकर शूद्र का शरीर पाकर जन्मा। मैं मन, कर्म और वाणी से शिव का सेवक था, पर दूसरे देवताओं की निंदा करता और अभिमानी था।
In that Kali age I went to Kosala city and was born, taking a śūdra's body. I was a servant of Śiva in mind, deed and word, but I abused other gods and was proud.

२2धन मद मत्त परम बाचाला। उग्रबुद्धि उर दंभ बिसाला ॥जदपि रहेउँ रघुपति रजधानी। तदपि न कछु महिमा तब जानी ॥

मैं धन के मद में मतवाला, बहुत बोलने वाला, उग्र बुद्धि और हृदय में बड़े दम्भ वाला था। यद्यपि मैं रघुपति की राजधानी में रहा, तब भी मैंने उसकी कुछ महिमा नहीं जानी।
I was drunk with wealth and very talkative, hard in mind, and my heart was full of great vanity. Though I lived in Raghupati's capital, I did not then know anything of its glory.

३3अब जाना मैं अवध प्रभावा। निगमागम पुरान अस गावा ॥कवनेहुँ जन्म अवध बस जोई। राम परायन सो परि होई ॥

Now I know the power of Avadha, as the Vedas, Āgamas and Purāṇas sing: whoever lives in Avadha in any birth is sure to be devoted to Rāma.

४4अवध प्रभाव जान तब प्रानी। जब उर बसहिं रामु धनुपानी ॥सो कलिकाल कठिन उरगारी। पाप परायन सब नर नारी ॥

प्राणी अवध का प्रभाव तभी जानता है जब हृदय में धनुषधारी राम बसते हैं। हे उरगारी, वह कलिकाल कठिन है, उसमें सब स्त्री-पुरुष पाप में लगे हैं।
A creature knows Avadha's power only when Rāma with the bow in his hand lives in his heart. Garuḍa, that Kali age is hard, and all men and women are given to sin.
