Chapter 109 · The curse softened · Verses 1–

The voice says: let this one have a great blessing; so be it. Though he did a terrible wrong and I cursed him in anger, I have seen your goodness and shall be kind to him. Brahmins who forgive and do good to others are dear to me like Hari. My curse must not go in vain: he will have a thousand births, and in each the pain of birth and death will not touch him as a serpent bite. No birth will take away his knowledge. He was born in Raghupati's city, and then gave his mind to my service; by the power of that city and my favour, devotion to Rāma will rise in his heart. Be sure of this: keep the vow to please Hari and serve brahmins, and never disrespect them. Indra's thunderbolt, my trident, Death's rod, and Hari's fierce discus cannot kill the one who is slain by the fire of hatred for brahmins. Another blessing: your path will never be blocked. Bhuśuṇḍi heard Śiva's words, and his teacher said "so be it" and returned home. The dohās tell that, driven by Time, Bhuśuṇḍi went to the Vindhya mountain and became a serpent, then gave up that body without effort after a while, and the same with every body he took, as a man puts off old clothes for new. Śiva kept the rule of the Veda, and he suffered no pain; yet in many bodies his knowledge did not go.

Let there be the highest good for this one: so be it, the voice from the sky said. Hearing the brahmin's prayer, which was full of care for another, "so be it" came from the sky.
