The teacher praises Śiva in eight stanzas. He bows to the Lord, formless, all-pervading, the Veda in form, free of qualities and doubt, living in the sky of knowing. He is beyond sound and speech, the lord of the mountain, fearful and the death of death, yet kind. He is white as a snowy peak, deep, with the beauty of many love-gods, with the Gaṅgā in his locks, the crescent moon on his brow and snakes about his neck. He wears a lion's skin and a garland of skulls, the dear Śaṅkara, lord of all. He is fierce, wise, whole, unborn, the light of a million suns, the trident-bearer who is felt in feeling. He is beyond the sixteen parts, the end of the age, the enemy of Cupid, who gives joy to the good. Without worship of his feet, there is no peace in this world or the next. The teacher says he knows no yoga, prayer or worship; he only bows, worn by age, birth and sorrow, and begs Śiva to protect him. The ninth stanza says that whoever reads this Rudrāṣṭaka with devotion will have Śiva's favour. Hearing the prayer, Śiva was moved by the brahmin's love, and a voice from the temple asked him to choose a boon. The teacher asked for devotion to Śiva's feet and then another boon, that the pupil, bound by Māyā, be forgiven, and that the curse end quickly.
