Chapter 110·The brahmin birth, and Lomaśa·Verses 1–
In whatever body he took, among animals, gods or men, he followed worship of Rāma. One thorn he could never forget: his teacher's gentle, kind nature. In his last body he took a brahmin's, which the Vedas and Purāṇas say even the gods rarely get. He played with boys and acted out Rāma's sports. When grown, his father taught him; he understood, listened and thought over, but it did not please him. All desire left his mind, and only one thing took hold: love for Rāma's feet. Who, he asks, would leave the wish-cow and serve a worn-out one? He was lost in love, nothing pleased him, and his father tired of teaching. When both parents died, he went to the forest to worship the helper of the people. Wherever he found chief sages in the woods, he went to their hermitages and bowed his head. He asked them about Rāma's virtues, and they spoke; he listened with joy, free of fear by Śambhu's grace. The three deep desires left him, but one longing grew: to see Rāma's lotus feet, and make his birth bear fruit. Whomever he asked said God is in all that is; he did not like the formless view and loved the form with qualities. Remembering his teacher's words, his mind clung to Rāma's feet, and he wandered singing Raghupati's fame, with new love every moment. On Meru's peak, under the banyan, he saw the sage Lomaśa seated, bowed at his feet and spoke very humbly. Hearing his gentle, humble words, the kind sage asked, "Brahmin, why have you come?" He said, "Merciful one, you know all; teach me how to worship the Lord with qualities."
