Rāma says: 'Lakṣmaṇa, bring my bow and arrows. I shall dry up the sea with a fire-arrow. Prayer to a fool, friendship with a crooked man, good counsel to a born miser, tales of wisdom to one attached to the world, talk of dispassion to the very greedy, and tales of Hari to the angry and the lustful: it is like sowing seed in barren soil. It bears no fruit.' So saying, Raghupati strung his bow, and the plan pleased Lakṣmaṇa. The Lord fitted a terrible arrow, and a flame rose in the heart of the sea. Sharks, serpents and fish were in distress. When the ocean knew his creatures were burning, he gave up his pride and came in the form of a brahmin, with a golden tray filled with many jewels. The dohā: the plantain bears fruit only when cut, though one waters it with a million efforts. Listen, king of birds: the base do not heed a prayer, they only obey a threat.
