Hearing the letter, Rāvaṇa smiles on his lips though afraid in mind, and says to all: 'He has fallen on the ground and tries to grasp the sky. A petty ascetic's talk is only play.' Śuka says: 'Lord, all this is true. Give up your proud nature and understand. Hear me, give up your anger, and give up your quarrel with Rāma. Raghubīra is very gentle, though king of all the worlds. When you meet him, he will be kind to you and keep no fault in his heart. Give Janaka's daughter to Raghunātha. Do this much for me, Lord.' When Śuka said 'Give Vaidehī', the fool kicked him. Bowing at his feet, Śuka went where Raghunāyaka, the ocean of mercy, was. Bowing to him, he told his story and by Rāma's grace regained his own state. Bhavānī, by the curse of the sage Agastya he had become a demon; he had been a wise sage. Bowing again and again at Rāma's feet, the sage went to his own hermitage. The dohā: the foolish sea did not heed the prayer, and three days passed. Then Rāma spoke in anger: 'Without fear, there is no love.'
