The spy says a hundred thousand Śeṣas could not tell Rāma's glory, strength and wit. He could dry a hundred seas with one arrow, and yet he asked his brother, who is skilled in right conduct. On his word, Rāma asks the sea for a path, with mercy in his mind. Hearing this, Rāvaṇa laughed: 'If such is the wit, he has made monkeys his helpers! He has made a natural coward's words firm and set his mind on a child's insistence with the sea. Fool, why do you praise falsely? I have found the measure of the enemy's strength and wit. Where is victory and glory in the world for one whose minister Vibhīṣaṇa is afraid?' Hearing the wicked words, the messenger's anger grew. Seeing the time, he took out the letter. 'Rāma's younger brother gave me this letter. Lord, have it read and cool your heart.' Rāvaṇa smiled, took it with his left hand, called his ministers, and began to have it read. The dohās are the letter: 'Do not please your mind with words, fool, and do not destroy your family. You cannot survive opposing Rāma, even in the shelter of Viṣṇu, Brahmā or Śiva. Either give up pride and be a bee at the Lord's lotus feet like your younger brother, or will you, wicked one, with your family be a moth in the fire of Rāma's arrows?'
